Friday Fiver | What I’m Currently Reading #1

Happy Friday, blogger friends. I’ve been swamped with reading and work, but I knew I wanted to get a post up! So, I figured I’d share with you five books I’m currently reading. (I’m actually reading more than 5…but I thought I’d just pick the few that stand out, LOL).

Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett

This story follows teenager Bailey Rydell, a classic film fanatic who shares the same interest as her online friend, Alex. Alex lives in the same town as Bailey’s dad, and when she moves to California to live with him, she doesn’t tell Alex, fearing he may be someone creepy. In Cali, she picks up a part-time job at a wacky museum, has to deal with her annoyingly hot superior Porter Roth, and seeks out Alex without him knowing. I’m really enjoying this one so far and it is a great read-alike for anything by Sarah Dessen. I’m pretty sure I know where this one is headed considering the premise of the book. This one also totally makes me think of my online crushes, past and present.

Everlasting Nora by Marie Miranda Cruz
(Expected date of publication: October 2nd, 2018)

Cruz’s debut is about Nora, a 12-year-old girl who lives in a Manila cemetery with her mother, after their home burned down. A co-worker of mine picked this ARC up for me from NJLA BECAUSE I’m also Filipina. I’ve read Mae Respicio’s recent debut, The House that Lou Built, which I adored and focuses on a Filipina-American adolescent. I was excited to pick this one up since it was about a Filipina girl in her home country. I’m a little more than halfway finished and right now I’m waiting for something good to finally happen to Nora!

Terror is Our Business: Dana Roberts’ Casebook of Horrors by Joe R. & Kasey Lansdale

This collection of short stories was sent to me for review by a rep from Smith Publicity which is actually based in my town. Definitely a promising option for those who enjoy reading supernatural stories with angry ghosts, shape-shifters, and kick-butt female heroines. I’ve read the first four stories and, for the most part, they start slow but they are pretty creepy.

The Rose Society (Young Elites #2) by Marie Lu

I have loved nearly everything by Marie Lu, but something about The Young Elites makes it hard for me to get into. Similarly to the first installment, I’m having a hard time picking up The Rose Society and reading more than just a couple of pages. The thing is, I’m super interested in this story. I think the plot is unique and I’m intrigued that she chose to focus on a protagonist that is more villainous than heroic. I think this will be sitting on my “currently reading” shelf for a while.

Chasing Christmas Eve (Heartbreaker Bay #4) by Jill Shalvis

Honestly, where would I be without contemporary romances? They are so easy to read and breeze through. Also, they’re the perfect pick-me-up when I’m not feeling so great (which is more often than I’m okay with). This one features a love connection between a nerdy hunk and a YA fantasy author–I love it!

What are you currently reading? Anything promising or maybe not-so-much?
