Swoony Saturdate #1

Happy Saturday, my friends. Looking for your next book date this weekend? Look no further! Darling blogger friend, Karen Jo (Sincerely Karen Jo) has created this awesome weekly segment which she uses to feature her favorite bookish boyfriends.

I’ll do my best to not give too much of these handsome gentlemen’s stories away and I will be sure to mix up it up by featuring both young adult and adult romantic heroes!

P.S. I’m not good at fan-casting fictional characters, so any real-life photos included in my post will be accredited to whomever selected them (if not by me).

Today’s date is Joshua Templeman from Sally Thorne’s The Hating Game.

First of all, if you love romance books and haven’t read this one, you are definitely missing out. Joshua’s and Lucy’s story is a delight and is as sexy as it is sweet.

I am such a huge fan of grumpy male protagonists and at the beginning of the story, Joshua most definitely comes off as a grumpy-pants.

Lucy and Joshua are both executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. As a result of their seemingly divergent personalities and natural behaviors, they hate each other, often playing mind-games as a means of one-upping the other.

Joshua is loyal to his boss and intimidates his co-workers with his strictness, his need for organization, and his determination to get work done and done well. He wears his shirts in a colored sequence throughout the week (which drives Lucy crazy) and he eats insanely healthy and stays fit (there’s more to this than obvious reasons). But little Lucy (she’s seriously only five feet tall) is the only person who seems to get under his skin and he loves taunting her just as much as she loves to taunt him.

Joshua’s appeal, though, is not only in his extremely domineering attitude and witty banter, but the genuine insecurity and kindness he has inside. Joshua has his reasons for his general prickliness and it’s Lucy who is lucky enough to unearth them. They may hate each other in the beginning, but tricky mind games soon become delicious flirtations and keeping their distance from one another is impossible.

Here are just a few of my favorites quotes by and about Joshua:

“The trick is to find that one person who can give it back as good as they can take it.”

“Today is a magnificent black T-shirt day…I tear my eyes away, but they slide back moments later. Underneath that T-shirt is a body that could fog an elderly librarian’s glasses. I think my underwear is curling off me like burning paper.”

“Watching you pretend to hate the nickname is the best part of my day.”

“Shyness takes so many different forms. Some people are shy and soft. Some, shy and hard. Or in Josh’s case, shy, and wrapped in military-grade armor.”

“I hope it’s not too forward of me to say, but your eyes are incredible, Lucy. I die when you blink.”  (audible sigh)

“I love you, Lucy Hutton. So much, you have no idea. Please be my best friend.”

I adore this story (and Joshua) so much that I’ve read it twice and skimmed a few of my favorite parts here and there.

Joshua is the kind of person who makes a salad for himself and when you try to coerce him into eating your juicy steak by waving a piece on a fork in front of his face, he shakes his head and smiles that devilish smile as he slowly takes that piece of steak into his mouth while you drool like a fool. He is the kind to indulge you and enjoy every second of it (while undoubtedly having something saucy and witty to say, of course).

Enjoy your Saturdate, everyone!
